Spotlight On Spices! Issue March-April 2013 - Carminatives Expel Gastro Gas
March 24, 2013

Happy April to you all! No, this is not an early April Fool’s joke; just an early arrival into your email box because I didn’t send out a March newsletter. Also, I wanted to get this one out in time for March Madness, here in the States. The madness is a great time to enjoy outstanding collegiate basketball. Top seeds are toppled by underdogs, and some of the on-court plays are mind-boggling. And, to cap off this maddening time is the myriad versions of chili, baked beans and other intestinal gas-causing foods being consumed in super-sized servings. THE SPICE OF LIFE - Carminatives Expel Gastro Gas!

Carminatives are agents that prevent or expel gas from the gastrointestinal tract (stomach and intestines) so as to relieve flatulence.

Many people are quite familiar with over-the counter remedies for flatulence (Tums, Rolaids, Gas-Ease, etc.); however, folks are starting to learn more about the herbs and spices used naturally by earlier generations. Check out the following link to see a list of the more popular carminatives (e.g., Ajwain-Ajowan and Epazote) that you can incorporate into your dishes to lessen, or eliminate, the effects of gas build-up. At the second link you’ll be able to peruse a list of herbs and spices that will help ease digestion. March off to the madness, and spring into April!
